During the workshop you will research the possibilities for this expansion.

Tata Steel

FULL Subject: Fictive case-study, advising the decision makers.

Tata Steel is a big player in the steel industry. In order to make enough profitable steel, it is very important to search for the best balance between quality and price of the raw materials that are used for making pellets and sinter. Additionally, we purchase part of the pellets on the world market. It is a repeating exercise to determine the best mix of raw materials and own versus external pellets at that moment. In this case, you are going to advise the decision makers on the most economical iron ores on the spot market.

SRON

FULL Subject: Investigate the Earth from space at SRON

Satellites are playing an increasingly important role in Earth Sciences owing to the rapidly increasing availability of data for a growing number of applications. SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research contributes to this development in various fields, including the observation of the atmospheric composition. SRON played a key role, for example, in the development of the Dutch satellite mission TROPOMI, for the monitoring of air pollutants and greenhouse gases, which was launched last year. The TROPOMI mission is a success thanks to a close collaboration between research institutes, like SRON, industrial partners, and the European Space Agency ESA. Besides instrument development, SRON is closely involved in the data processing and scientific exploitation of the data. Here, the information in the measurements is translated into knowledge on the physics and chemistry of the earth system, which national governments need to develop sustainable development policies for climate and air quality. These activities are carried out in close collaboration with academic partners, notably the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and TU Delft.

Do you want to know more about earth observation at SRON, career opportunities in this fascinating discipline, and options for thesis research projects and internships? Then sign up for our workshop at the Earth Science Career Event. For personal information and advise you can also make an appointment for a meet&connect CV interview.

FULL Subject: Fluids and reservoirs, energy from below

Fluids like oil, gas and water can accumulate in porous, subsurface reservoir rocks. There are many varieties of rocks,  from volcanic, to carbonate and siliciclastic rocks – no single field is alike. In this workshop we will be looking at many different types of depositional environments and their associated lithologies. After you and your team have discussed the geology and presented your “Top 3 Reservoir Rocks”, we will go into more detail, focusing on the best strategy to develop and produce your field. What volumes are we talking about? What are the subsurface risks? What are the economic risks? How can we supply the world with energy whilst minimizing the environmental impact? You will take into account important factors such as the people,  organizations/NGO’s and governments with whom you would need to work. This workshop will provide a high level overview of the most fundamental aspects of our industry and projects. Join us and see how you can #make the difference!

Lievense

Subject: Design a stronger dike; earth scientists in a technical-social playing field

In this case, taken from daily business at Lievense, you will be asked to collaborate in the design process of strengthening one of the dikes in the Netherlands. Of course, there are several solutions possible, but technical feasibility is one subject we have to deal with. Just like real planners, you will be confronted with conflicting interests of the users of the dike. What can you achieve? In several groups, the participants of this workshop will work, following handed guidelines, restrictions and natural boundary conditions, to come to a possible design for the dike. Afterwards, the designs will be discussed plenary on effectivity and originality.

Wareco Ingenieurs

FULL Subject: The importance of the subsurface and groundwater for the climate-proof city

Wareco is an agency that focuses on issues and problems in residential areas, within the themes of soil, water and foundations. A hot topic that we are very concerned with is making cities and villages climate-proof.

The subsurface is extremely important in climate adaptation. We have noticed that groundwater levels that too low or too high can lead to dehydration of nature, sagging sewers and roads, pile rot, mold in homes, unstable roads and marshy parks.

Are you curious how we deal with such problems? We take you into one of our projects in the urban area of the Netherlands. Together we think about the best solution(s) in the urban area. Because if we involve the subsurface, we can prevent climate errors.

Antea Group

Subject: Advisor for a day; development of the district Krekelwijk in Groenweelde.

The municipality of Groenweelde is searching for experts on the development of the newly built district Krekelwijk. Two engineering firms are battling to win the case. In two short session you get time to examine the needs of the client and acquire the needed information. This information will be transformed to a functional plan. In the workshop you’ll get tips to gather as much as possible useful information and to pitch your idea. Are you gonna win the case?
