Tensing

Subject: FME, GIS, (web)app development

FME Workshop Tensing

The goal of this assignment is to develop an application which can extract specific bag data from the PDOK (Kadaster) webservice. The application should be developed in FME Desktop in combination with FME Server. The desired result is a web app hosted with FME Server, which requests an address in the Netherlands as user input and gives back BAG data within a specific distance of the given address. This way users should be able to get back BAG data of their choice on the fly, giving them access to geospatial data without any prior GIS knowledge.

PanTerra Geoconsultants

Subject: Geothermal system, geological evaluation, subsurface modelling (EN)

“Design your own geothermal system”

Get to know PanTerra and our subsurface expertise. We will show you what kind of work PanTerra is involved in, which includes geological evaluation, subsurface modelling, and lab work. During the workshop you will become a geoscientist for PanTerra. The project you and your future colleagues will work on is as follows; you will design a geothermal system based on the surface and subsurface of the study area. During this exercise you will look at a seismic profile of the subsurface, wells drilled in the area, aboveground infrastructure, and heat demand. This will help you in selecting the most favourable location. In this way you contribute to a more sustainable energy mix!

Shell !!FULL!!

Subject: Fluids and reservoirs, energy from below

This workshop is FULL

Language workshop: English

Fluids like oil, gas and (warm) water can accumulate in porous, subsurface reservoir rocks. These fluids can be used for heating, mobility and even producing critical chemicals such as medicines! The same subsurface reservoir rocks can also be used to permanently store CO2. There are many varieties of rocks, from volcanic, to carbonate and siliciclastic rocks – no single field is alike. In this workshop we will be looking at many different types of depositional environments and their associated lithologies. After you and your team have discussed the geology and presented your “Top 3 Reservoir Rocks”, we will go into more detail, focusing on the best strategy to develop and produce your field. What volumes are we talking about? What are the subsurface risks? What are the economic risks? How can we supply the world with energy whilst minimizing the environmental impact? You will take into account important factors such as the people, organizations/NGO’s and governments with whom you would need to work. This workshop will provide a high level overview of the most fundamental aspects of our industry and projects. Join us and see how you can contribute in CCS and/or Energy production!

Lievense

Subject: Design a stronger dike; earth scientists in a technical-social playing field

In this case, taken from daily business at Lievense, you will be asked to collaborate in the design process of strengthening one of the dikes in the Netherlands. Of course, there are several solutions possible, but technical feasibility is one subject we have to deal with. Just like real planners, you will be confronted with conflicting interests of the users of the dike. What can you achieve? In several groups, the participants of this workshop will work, following handed guidelines, restrictions and natural boundary conditions, to come to a possible design for the dike. Afterwards, the designs will be discussed plenary on effectivity and originality.

RSC

Subject: Career opportunities, geology, minerals, management  (EN)

‘Working in the Global Minerals Sector’

René Sterk is an alumnus of the VU and has worked in the minerals sector for 20 years, based out of New Zealand. At the moment, Rene is a director at RSC mining .  Through his work with RSC, he has worked in or travelled to more than 25 countries, worked in many commodities (including gold, copper, base metals, C, REE, Li, mineral sands, seabed nodules, and others), and has had the privilege to have been exposed to pretty much every weird and wonderful geological setting or deposit style you can find. René will provide an overview of his journey and experiences after graduating from the VU with a structural geology degree, to establishing RSC as a globally recognised mineral industry consulting company. Rene will talk about the career pathways in the resources industry; how to pick a good employer, the rewards and the downsides of the work. The workshop will be delivered in Dutch/English.

Rene will answer questions like:
– What university courses are important? Maths, computer programming, petrology, etc?
– Is a MSc or PhD important or will a BSc do?
– Where does my degree compare in the global employment world?
– What kind of work would I be doing?
– What career progression pathways are there in this field?
– I am excited about the Energy Transition space; how can I get into that and what do I need to know to get there?
– How do I grow my network and how do I improve my CV to position myself well?
– Can I do this work remotely at some point and can I work from Europe or do I have to travel and live overseas?

There’ll be plenty of time for questions!
