Studying biology at the free university at the end of the 70s, early 80s I never realized that even ecologists could live a happy life in the engineer’s world. Joining the first group of Chemists, and Biologists and through my love for programming and mathematics I soon stepped into the modelling frameworks of Delft Hydraulics, building and distributing Dutch water expertise around the world. Slowly moving towards larger and more complex situations, like the heavily polluted rivers in Shanghai, the closure of Marina Bay in Singapore, the sinking of Jakarta and restoration of Manila Bay. I just moved to Singapore, looking forward to work on the future and connect the climate research of Singapore, the Netherlands and other innovative countries…
About JanJaap Brinkman
JanJaap Brinkman Is a senior water management specialist at Deltares, the institute for applied research in water and subsurface. He studied mathematical ecology at the free university and started his career working on the Oosterschelde kering at Rijkswaterstaat in 1984. Soon after that he moved to het Waterloopkundig Laboratorium (Delft Hydraulics) to join the first group of Chemists, Biologists, Geologists to assist the engineers managing the water of the Netherlands and abroad. Most of his time he worked on projects globally including more than 10 years in Indonesia. In 2007 his flood team discovered the fast sinking of Jakarta and formulated options to address that. For the last 3 years he was based in Manila as the team leader for the Manila Bay Sustainable Development Master Plan. He now is based in Singapore to lead the operations of the Deltares branch office.
Do you know where you will be in 5 or 10 years? Me neither, and as MSc student I never expected to start my own business before my 30th.
You will probably find you’re path while you’re on the road. But how do you choose the right directions if you don’t know your destination? It’s about the choices you make today that determine your tomorrow. I believe you will be able to find your passion by doing what you like, doing what you don’t like, reflecting, concluding, planning, making choices and start over by doing again.
So, what’s the first step after graduation? I graduated with a MSc in Geology from the UU and as geoscientist at Shell. I loved solving geological fieldwork puzzles during my studies, but while writing my thesis I quickly found out that a career as desktop geologist did not suit me. In this lecture, I will reflect on the choices that I took in my short career that resulted in founding a renewable energy company. I will emphasize on the valuable skills and knowledge that geoscientists have for our path towards a new economy and discuss what empowers my and your future.
About Michiel Ottevanger
Sharp look. With vision. And always looking for ‘common ground’, synergy. Michiel finds it exciting that so many diverse themes come together in one complex challenge, the energy transition. The social impact, political character, spatial integration and the large technical component make it probably the biggest challenge of his life.
Michiel graduated with a MSc in Geology and Geophysics from the UU, graduated as geoscientist at Shell and started his career as Commercial advisor for Vermilion Energy. Two years ago, Michiel founded D4, his own renewable project development company. At D4, Michiel is lead developer in geothermal-, biogas, bioLNG-, wind-, hydrogen- and energy storage projects.
Michiel is passionate, inventive, interested and a sailor.
You might have been wondering: what do you need to do to become a professor? I will give you an overview of the choices that I have made, and the important points in my life (some planned, but also many unplanned but lucky coincidences!), that helped me in shaping my career and finally becoming a professor in Deep Earth structure and global seismology. My earth science career most likely started with being a student assistant at one of the largest European Geosciences conference that was held in The Hague in the 3rd of my undergraduate studies. The next big step was doing my master research project at Oxford University. If you want to know the steps that I took after my student days, then come and listen to my lecture!
About Arwen Deuss
Arwen Deuss is a professor in Deep Earth structure and composition at Utrecht University. Her career in Earth Sciences started as a student at Utrecht University in 1993, where she graduated in geophysics in 1998. She then moved to Oxford University to do a PhD in seismology, which was awarded in 2002. She stayed in Oxford for a few more years as ‘Junior Research Fellow’ at University, before becoming a lecturer and then a reader at Cambridge University in 2004. After spending 10 years in Cambridge (and a total of 16 years in the UK!), Arwen finally moved back to the Netherlands in 2014 where she became a professor at Utrecht University in 2017 and she now runs her own research group in global seismology of Earth’s deep interior.
In my presentation I will give a short overview of my educational, professional and amateur sports career and how my curiosity kept me on a path of continuous learning and development. I always had a broad interest and that has got me to the point where I am now. I will take you on a journey and share a few of the lessons I have learned in the past 25 years of my career.
About Patrick Brooijmans
Started his professional career after his study of geology as a mud logger with Halliburton. After three years he took a job in the Army as a terrain analyst (military) and came into contact with the power of geographic information systems (GIS). He fulfilled several functions within the Ministry of Defense in a career spanning almost 20 years. The main focus in this 20 years was geographic information management and GIS. He is currently employed as senior information manager at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) responsible for GIS and innovation and coordinating 11 colleagues. Besides his geology degree he has a master in geographic information science from the VU Amsterdam and is currently doing a MBA at Nyenrode University.
Earth Scientists Don’t have Careers. They go on Fieldtrips.
A career is often seen as a linear path, upwards. A single ladder standing against a steep wall.
In real life, linear lifelong careers are rare. Career paths go up and down and bend around unexpected corners. Sometimes steep, rarely boring. Like fieldtrips.
So how do you move forwards on a winding road? Navigation skills and colour pencils are key to mapping your career on the go, a compass helps you setting direction. The most important ingredients for a successful career however are not what know, or the tools you master. To get the job, or join the next trip, it matters who you know and knowing where you want to go. Exploring opportunities means connecting with communities, and you setting direction. Let’s go!
About Anouk Creusen
Anouk graduated with a MSc in Sedimentology from the VU where she founded the Earth Science Career Event and Gaia, network for women in earth sciences. She joined Shell as a geologist and worked for 15 years in The Netherlands, the UAE, Oman and Brazil until she decided her energy would be better spent on decarbonising the energy system. From the Middle East to Brazil, Anouk founded professional technical women’s networks, convinced that the economic and social impact of technical women leaving the workforce is devastating for innovation and inclusive decision making.
She now runs her own company 75inQ where she works on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals’ #SDG7 and #SDG5; Accelerating the transition to clean energy by bringing gender balance to the top.
Multiple lectures will be held to activate the students with present-day topics in the sector. In the two parallel sessions, students can choose to attend the lectures that best suit their interests.
Charlotte graduated from Utrecht University with a Master in Earth Sciences in 2010. Since then she has worked in several positions in the geothermal field, starting with consultancy at IF Technology. Seeking a more international focus she worked for Transmark Renewables, a geothermal development company fully dedicated to greenfield exploration and development in Turkey, Chile and The Netherlands.
Now at HVC she is contribution to the energy transition by developing geothermal projects in its shareholder municipalities. HVC is a company dedicated to sustainable waste management and recycling as well as a renewable energy producer with wind, solar and geothermal assets.
Jaap Kwadijk is scientific director of Deltares. His scientific expertise includes water management, climate adaptation, hydrology, flood risks and high water forecasting systems. Jaap studied Physical Geography at the University of Amsterdam and graduated as a Quaternary geologist in 1986. After working for two years at the ‘Milieuplanbureau’, a forerunner of the current ‘Planbureau van de Leefomgeving’, he started a PhD research at Utrecht University in 1988 into the consequences of climate change for the Rhine. He completed this research in 1993. In 1997 he moved from Utrecht University to the Delft Waterworks Laboratory, now known as Deltares. Since then he has been involved in (high) water management. Jaap is one of the founders of a high-water forecasting system called Delft-FEWS ‘, which is used in more than 40 countries. During his career he regularly worked on water projects abroad, including in Mongolia, Iran, Surinam, Hong Kong and Bangladesh. He lived in Egypt for two years. Nowadays he is concerned with the question of how we can adapt to climate change and sea level rise. In addition to his work at Deltares, Jaap is professor of modeling water management and climate at the University of Twente.
In 2013 Peter Paul joined the RedZebra Group started working in the field of Personal Leadership, Team and Organizational Leadership Development. During this journey strategies where developed to discover individual and organisational purpose. Why do you get out of bed every morning and why should anybody care?
My name is Annemijn van Stiphout and I am a first year PhD student in seismology at Utrecht University. In the past few years, I did a BSc Earth Sciences and an Msc Earth, Structure & Dynamics, both in Utrecht. For my thesis, I went to Cambridge for half a year to conduct a seismological study on a subduction zone in Alaska. Like my studies, my favourite holidays also involve mountains, whether it is for hiking, skiing, snowboarding or climbing. The Earth is an intriguing study area, with many interesting processes occurring on and in it, and I think with everything that is happening in the world right now, it is a challenging, but also a very interesting time to study this planet.
Ramon is a Structural Geologist. After obtaining a Ph.D. from the Australian National University, he returned to The Netherlands to work as a Research Scientist for Shell. Since then he has worked for Shell in many technical and managerial positions in Oil & Gas Exploration all around the world. For example, he was Shell’s Exploration Manager for Unconventional Exploration in Latin America. From 2013-2017, he was Exploration Manager for The Netherlands (NAM), Germany and the Southern North Sea. Lately, he has become interested in the role Integrated Energy Companies can play in the Energy Transition. As a subsurface specialist, he is particularly interested in Geothermal Energy and CCS.

A workshop gives the students the ideal opportunity to be introduced to your company in an interactive way. Parallel to the company fair there will be two rounds of workshops. Per round, the workshop will take 90 minutes for up to 30 students. The interpretation of the workshop is all up to you. Student feedback learns that interactive workshops are received very well, for example working on a case study with an overall conclusion.
It is possible to present an internship, possibly in combination with a Master thesis, or a job opening on our website. This will then be shown on our special vacancy page.
This edition we offer the CV-interviews just a bit different: Meet & Connect. When you decide to make use of this option, you get a classroom for 90 minutes where you can come in contact with talented students. Beforehand you will receive the CV’s of all the interested students so that you can make a selection that you think is best. With every selected student a 20-minute conversation is scheduled. This gives the opportunity to discover new talent and possibly discuss internships or a job opening! Do you want to speak to more than 4 or 5 students individually? It is possible to double-book this option so the classroom will be at your disposal for 180 minutes.
