Jaap Kwadijk is scientific director of Deltares. His scientific expertise includes water management, climate adaptation, hydrology, flood risks and high water forecasting systems. Jaap studied Physical Geography at the University of Amsterdam and graduated as a Quaternary geologist in 1986. After working for two years at the ‘Milieuplanbureau’, a forerunner of the current ‘Planbureau van de Leefomgeving’, he started a PhD research at Utrecht University in 1988 into the consequences of climate change for the Rhine. He completed this research in 1993. In 1997 he moved from Utrecht University to the Delft Waterworks Laboratory, now known as Deltares. Since then he has been involved in (high) water management. Jaap is one of the founders of a high-water forecasting system called Delft-FEWS ‘, which is used in more than 40 countries. During his career he regularly worked on water projects abroad, including in Mongolia, Iran, Surinam, Hong Kong and Bangladesh. He lived in Egypt for two years. Nowadays he is concerned with the question of how we can adapt to climate change and sea level rise. In addition to his work at Deltares, Jaap is professor of modeling water management and climate at the University of Twente.
Charlotte graduated from Utrecht University with a Master in Earth Sciences in 2010. Since then she has worked in several positions in the geothermal field, starting with consultancy at IF Technology. Seeking a more international focus she worked for Transmark Renewables, a geothermal development company fully dedicated to greenfield exploration and development in Turkey, Chile and The Netherlands.
Now at HVC she is contribution to the energy transition by developing geothermal projects in its shareholder municipalities. HVC is a company dedicated to sustainable waste management and recycling as well as a renewable energy producer with wind, solar and geothermal assets.
In 2013 Peter Paul joined the RedZebra Group started working in the field of Personal Leadership, Team and Organizational Leadership Development. During this journey strategies where developed to discover individual and organisational purpose. Why do you get out of bed every morning and why should anybody care?
My name is Annemijn van Stiphout and I am a first year PhD student in seismology at Utrecht University. In the past few years, I did a BSc Earth Sciences and an Msc Earth, Structure & Dynamics, both in Utrecht. For my thesis, I went to Cambridge for half a year to conduct a seismological study on a subduction zone in Alaska. Like my studies, my favourite holidays also involve mountains, whether it is for hiking, skiing, snowboarding or climbing. The Earth is an intriguing study area, with many interesting processes occurring on and in it, and I think with everything that is happening in the world right now, it is a challenging, but also a very interesting time to study this planet.
Ramon is a Structural Geologist. After obtaining a Ph.D. from the Australian National University, he returned to The Netherlands to work as a Research Scientist for Shell. Since then he has worked for Shell in many technical and managerial positions in Oil & Gas Exploration all around the world. For example, he was Shell’s Exploration Manager for Unconventional Exploration in Latin America. From 2013-2017, he was Exploration Manager for The Netherlands (NAM), Germany and the Southern North Sea. Lately, he has become interested in the role Integrated Energy Companies can play in the Energy Transition. As a subsurface specialist, he is particularly interested in Geothermal Energy and CCS.
Developing a geothermal system is usually done with subsurface data from the oil and gas industry. Although a lot of data from this industry is openly available, it does not cover the complete area of the Netherlands and is thus not always representative for the location where a geothermal project is planned. In addition to this, mining geothermal heat is significantly different from mining oil or gas. Unfortunately, the revenues of a geothermal project aren’t such that there is a lot of room to invest in data acquisition or extended research. As a result, the development of a geothermal system is quite challenging and has to deal with various uncertainties. These uncertainties resulted in unforeseen issues; in some cases, these issues have had an impact on the produced thermal power, in other cases, they have led to unsafe situations which resulted in a temporary shutdown of the system. Examples of these unsafe situations are the chance of inducing seismicity, having a blow-out during drilling or rapid corrosion of the completions of the wells. These situations resulted in an increase in legislation demands.
Because the geothermal market is relatively young and has a limited amount of money to invest, the developers have to be innovative to develop a geothermal project and make it profitable. In this presentation, a brief historical overview of the realized projects is given, as well as a discussion of the encountered problems and their solutions.
Henk Ovink was appointed by the Dutch Cabinet as the first Special Envoy for International Water Affairs (2015). As the Ambassador for Water, he is responsible for advocating water awareness around the world, focusing on building institutional capacity and coalitions among governments, multilateral organizations, the private sector and NGO’s to address the world’s stressing needs on water and help initiate transformative interventions.
Ovink is also Sherpa to the High Level Panel on Water, installed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and President of the World Bank Jim Kim with 10 Heads of State / Heads of Government including Prime Minister Rutte from The Netherlands to catalyze change in water awareness and implementation. Henk is Principal for Rebuild by Design, the resilience innovation competition he developed and led for President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force where he was Senior Advisor to the Chair. He has been Director General for Planning and Water Affairs and Director for National Spatial Planning in The Netherlands.
Ovink teaches at the London School of Economics and at Harvard GSD and is a member of the International Advisory Board for the City of Rotterdam. He was Curator for the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2012 ‘Making City’, and curated the debate series ‘Design and Politics: the next phase’ for Aedes network Campus Berlin. He initiated the research program and is chief editor of the series of publications with NAI010 Publishers on Design and Politics.

A workshop gives the students the ideal opportunity to be introduced to your company in an interactive way. Parallel to the company fair there will be two rounds of workshops. Per round, the workshop will take 90 minutes for up to 30 students. The interpretation of the workshop is all up to you. Student feedback learns that interactive workshops are received very well, for example working on a case study with an overall conclusion.
